The Generation That's Taking Fish Keeping to the Next Level

A new generation of pet owners has arrived, and they're treating their animals like their own children. Millennials have become the dominant pet-owning demographic in the United States, and their relationship with animals goes far deeper than feeding schedules and vet visits.

Currently, more than a third of all pet-owning households in the US are headed by millennials. The numbers are striking: around three-quarters of Americans in their 30s share their home with a dog, and more than half keep cats, well above the national averages of roughly 50% for dogs and 35% for cats.

To better understand this generational bond, Mr. Fish took a deep dive into global pet ownership trends. The findings paint a clear picture: for this generation, a pet isn't just an animal companion, it's a genuine family member, often treated with the same emotional investment as a child.

Eight in ten millennial respondents said getting a pet felt like part of the natural progression toward starting a family. Nearly two-thirds admitted they'd feel more anxious being separated from their pet for a week than going without their smartphone. And nearly three-quarters of employed millennials said they'd accept a lower salary in exchange for a pet-friendly workplace.

The survey also revealed some telling priorities. Nearly half of those in relationships said their pet's opinion of a new partner matters more to them than their own family's approval. More than four in ten admitted they'd rather cuddle with their pet on the sofa than with their significant other. And a third of millennial parents found their kids were more excited to greet the family pet after time apart than to run to mom or dad.

Pet pride isn't just emotional, either - it's commercial. Over 80% of millennial pet owners display their devotion through branded merchandise, from apparel and wall décor to mugs and doormats, proudly announcing their status as a pet parent.

For aquatic pet businesses, this cultural shift is a significant opportunity. Millennials don't just buy fish, they curate living ecosystems, invest in rare and exotic species, and share their tanks with thousands of followers online. Meeting that demand with quality, variety, and care is what sets serious suppliers apart.

The Numbers Behind the Passion:

  • Millennials make up the largest share of pet owners in the US at 33%, with Gen Z rapidly closing the gap at 25%, meaning more than half of all pet owners today belong to the two youngest generations.
  • Freshwater fish rank as the third most popular pet in the US, trailing only dogs and cats, making aquarium ownership one of the fastest-growing segments of the pet industry.
  • According to industry data, 52% of fish owners now purchase a gift for their fish on at least one occasion, up from 45% in 2018, and 49% have made or plan to make provisions for their fish in their wills, a 29% increase since 2018.
  • Millennials and Gen Z are more willing to experiment with new species, food types, and products than older generations, and are more likely to discover new pet products through social media and online research.
  • Urban millennials in particular are turning to aquarium fish as their pet of choice, driven by rental restrictions on dogs and cats, busy lifestyles, and the proven stress-reducing benefits of watching fish.
  • Fish store visits have grown significantly, with 37% of fish owners now purchasing directly from specialist fish stores, a 32% increase since 2018, signaling a shift toward quality, expert-sourced livestock over mass-market options.
